Adapting to working from home

As we adapt to working from home during this unprecedented time, it is important to create the right working environment to help you keep focused, productive and supporting your wellbeing. Here are 5 top tips to help you adapt:

1. Creating the right working environment - setup your working area away from the living room so you use this space solely to relax and switch off or spend time with your family. Our psyches crave order, so when your space is orderly and free of clutter it will help you focus and concentrate on your work. Don’t have the TV on (even if it is just for background noise) as it will affect your productivity. At the end of your working day, close down and put away your laptop so that you are out of work mode.

2. Show up every day – although it may be tempting to stay in your pj’s and work with your laptop in bed, this will have a negative impact on your productivity. Get dressed and show up for work every day. Set your alarm clock, get up at the same time every day and establish a daily routine.

3. Minimise disruptions – set boundaries with your family whilst you are working and set clear break times. Establish a “this is my working area” rule so you aren’t disturbed and close the door. Diairise time to connect with your colleagues/friends and family to avoid your phone constantly ringing during the day.

4. Wellbeing – setup your working space by a window if possible to get some natural light and open a window for fresh air. Schedule regular breaks throughout the day and move around so that you aren’t sat at your laptop all day. Ensure you exercise daily to support your physical and mental wellbeing.

5. Work life balance – create a daily routine and schedule to meet you and your family’s requirements. Set a daily goals for work, connecting with family/friends/colleagues, health and leisure time. Make time every day to relax and do something that you enjoy.
